What is the Next Step?
I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed today. I can recognize it is
an accumulation of fast paced thinking, & nothing to do with
the actual situation. What I’m trying to do is to simply ask
myself, “What is the next step?”. No more; no less. What is
only one thing to do to proceed? For me I use paper & write
down that one next step to focus on. Once I’ve accomplished
that, I only write one more, “next step” to focus on. As far as
the fast paced thinking of confusion, I know it will pass, but
rather than spiraling down, or having an anxiety attack, I know
I can move forward. Turning off possibly distracting audio or
video helps to calm my mind. I can affirm I’m doing good, I am
safe, & this too shall pass. This strategy isn’t needed when I’m
going naturally with the flow. When I feel at ease with what
I’m doing & accomplishing, it is a pleasant experience. It’s the
time I have thoughts & feelings of uncertainty, where I need to
slow down, simplify, & relax my way back into a focused
frame of mind. Martin Luther King Jr, is quoted as saying,
“Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole
staircase, just take the first step.” The beauty of this simple way
to approach an overwhelming situation seems like an elaquent
solution. Progress can be made in simplicity. The basic next
step can lead to a wonderful unfolding of good experience.
